To the Editor:

Why is the CEO of Kit Carson Electric Cooperative speaking at the Dakota Energy Meeting? Why would Kit Carson pay for sending its CEO to a South Dakota cooperative meeting? Who is paying for this expense?

The Energy Information Administration shows the following:
Average 2019 retail price by State
SD 9.96 cents/kW (DE rates = 14.28c)
CO 10.17 c. (Delta Montrose rates = 14.29c)
NM 8.99c. (Kit Carson rates = 18.55c)

East River has served South Dakota cooperatives very professionally and efficiently for over 70 years. Dakota Energy as a board member of East River has not voted against East River policies.

Why is Dakota Energy badmouthing East River? Why was East River not asked to speak at the meeting?

Generation from the coal and gas plants probably saved the electrical grid from collapsing during the recent power crisis. East River has backup generation through Basin Electric. East River also has an allocation from the power generated from the Missouri River dams. Power from other sources would still have to be delivered to Dakota Energy through East River system with renting (transmission) charges. The East River gives us reliability.
